Getting There

Liechtenstein has no airport, no motorway border crossing of its own, and until recently no passenger rail service within its borders. Getting there means arriving by train or bus from Switzerland or Austria, which is straightforward and actually rather pleasant.

By train

The nearest train stations are Buchs SG and Sargans in Switzerland and Feldkirch in Austria. From any of these, LIEmobil buses connect directly into Vaduz and the rest of the country. Buchs is on the main Zurich–Vienna line; the journey from Zurich takes about an hour and a quarter. From Feldkirch (served from Innsbruck and Bregenz), it is a short bus ride across the border.

Interrail and Eurail passes are valid to Buchs and Feldkirch but not within Liechtenstein itself.

By bus

Direct Postbus services run from St. Gallen (Switzerland) into Vaduz. The journey takes around an hour. This is the easiest connection if you are coming from Zurich airport without changing trains.

By car

There are no border formalities between Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Coming from Austria you pass through a brief checkpoint but it is rarely more than a wave-through. Switzerland requires a motorway vignette (CHF 40, valid for a calendar year) to use the autobahn; Liechtenstein does not charge one.

The most direct route from Zurich is via the A3/A13 motorway to Sargans, then east through the Rhine Valley. From Innsbruck, take the A14 to Feldkirch.

By air

The nearest major airports are Zurich (ZRH), about 80 km away, and Friedrichshafen (FDH) in Germany, which is smaller but served by budget airlines. Zurich has excellent onward connections; transfer to the S-Bahn for the train to Buchs.
