Practical Info

Currency

Liechtenstein uses the Swiss franc (CHF). Euros are sometimes accepted in tourist-facing businesses but at unfavourable rates. Cash machines are available in Vaduz and the larger towns.

Language

German is the official language. Most people in Vaduz and tourist businesses speak some English. In more rural areas, expect to manage with German. The Alemannic dialect spoken locally is quite different from standard German — Swiss German speakers will find it familiar, but standard German speakers may struggle with the spoken word.

Visas

Liechtenstein is not in the European Union or the Schengen Area, but it maintains an open border with Switzerland and has effectively aligned its border policy. In practice, EU and Swiss passport holders enter freely. Other nationalities should check current entry requirements, as the situation can differ from standard Schengen rules.

Passport stamps

Getting your passport stamped in Liechtenstein is a popular quirk. The tourist office in Vaduz charges a small fee for an official stamp. It has no legal function but makes a good souvenir.

Safety

Liechtenstein is extremely safe by any measure. Crime rates are very low, and the country is suitable for solo travel, family travel, and cycling at any time of year.

Costs

Prices are broadly in line with Switzerland — which is to say, high by most European standards. Expect to pay CHF 20–35 for a main course at a sit-down restaurant, CHF 3–5 for a coffee. Supermarkets and bakeries are the affordable option for lunch. Day-trippers who eat in Feldkirch or Buchs and only visit Vaduz for the afternoon will spend considerably less.

Opening hours

Shops typically open Monday to Friday 9:00–18:30, Saturday 9:00–17:00. Sunday closing is observed broadly, including supermarkets. Some smaller businesses also close Monday. Tourist attractions generally open daily in summer but may reduce hours or close on Mondays in winter.

Connectivity

Swiss SIM cards and roaming plans work seamlessly in Liechtenstein. Wi-Fi is available in hotels and most cafés in Vaduz.
