At 2,365 metres, Augstenberg is one of the highest peaks easily reached from Malbun on a good hiking trail. The route from the Sareiserjoch follows the ridge south for about three hours, with no exposed scrambling and a steady ascent. The summit cross looks down on the Schesaplana massif to the south and the entire principality of Liechtenstein to the north.
The hike is doable in proper shoes for any reasonable walker; the rock is solid limestone, the trail well marked. Take water — there are no springs on the ridge. The Pfälzer Hütte mountain hut on the way back makes a popular lunch stop.
