Sareis Chairlift and Sareiserjoch

The Sareis chairlift climbs from the upper end of Malbun to the Sareiserjoch at 2,000 metres in about ten minutes. The Bergrestaurant Sareis at the top has a south-facing terrace with a 360-degree view: across to the Austrian Vorarlberg, west into Switzerland, and along the spine of the Rätikon towards Bad Ragaz.

In winter the chairlift serves the Sareis ski slopes — the longest and most rewarding runs in the resort, suited to intermediates and above. In summer it is the starting point for hikes along the Liechtenstein-Austria border ridge — including the popular three-hour walk to the Augstenberg summit.

A story
The Sareis was reportedly the favourite hiking spot of Liechtenstein's late Prince Franz Josef II, who skied at Malbun himself well into his seventies. The royal family still hikes the area; it is not unusual to share the chairlift with someone who turns out to be a Liechtensteiner aristocrat.
