Basanavicius Street is the pedestrian boulevard running from the town centre toward the pier, and in summer it is the main artery of Palanga's social life. The street is lined with restaurants, bars, amber jewellery shops, ice cream stands, and souvenir stalls — it can feel relentlessly commercial in July, but the sheer energy of Lithuanian summer holidaymakers makes it entertaining rather than oppressive.
In the evening the boulevard fills completely. Families with children, couples, groups of friends — everyone comes through here on the way to or from the pier. Music drifts from the bars and the smell of grilling meats and waffle cones fills the air. It's chaotic and rather charming.
