Šiauliai Cat Museum

The Cat Museum (Kačių muziejus) is one of Šiauliai's eccentric small museums, packed end to end with cat figurines, paintings, postage stamps, and ephemera collected over decades. The exhibits are arranged in cramped rooms across two floors; a cat or two often dozes among the display cases.

Open Tuesday to Saturday, with reduced hours in winter. Admission is symbolic. Curiosities to seek out include the small section on Lithuanian cat folklore and a collection of cat-shaped clocks.

A story
The collection was founded in 1990 by a local cat lover, Vanda Kavaliauskienė, who began amassing cat-themed objects in the 1960s. The museum now holds more than 11,000 items — figurines, postcards, paintings, postage stamps — and is one of the very few specialised cat museums in the world. Live cats sometimes wander the rooms.
