Šiauliai is not a destination for fine dining, but the centre has a respectable spread of inexpensive Lithuanian restaurants serving the national staples — cold beetroot soup (šaltibarščiai), potato dumplings stuffed with meat (cepelinai), and the deep-fried bread sticks (kepta duona) eaten with garlic. A handful of bistros and pizzerias cover the rest of the city's eating-out needs.
