Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Basilica of the Visitation stands at the southern end of Trakai's main street, a late Baroque church whose white façade and twin towers frame the approach to the town from the direction of Vilnius. Built in the early 18th century by the Dominican order, it replaced an earlier Gothic church on the same site and has been one of the religious centres of the town since.

The interior is richly decorated for its size: carved altars, frescoes, and a silver-clad image of the Virgin Mary that has been a site of Catholic pilgrimage since the medieval period. The church is active and holds regular services. The churchyard has old tombstones in Lithuanian, Polish, and Russian reflecting the successive cultural layers of the town. Worth a brief visit for the quiet interior after the crowds at the castle.
