Trakai is 28 kilometres west of Vilnius and easily reached by public transport. Buses run frequently from Vilnius Bus Station (Autobusų Stotis) on the south side of the old town — journey time about 40 minutes, service roughly every 30 minutes. Trains also run from Vilnius railway station to Trakai, less frequently but offering a pleasant ride through the countryside.
By car, the drive from Vilnius takes about 30 minutes via the A1 motorway and then local roads. Parking is available near the town centre. The castle is about 15 minutes' walk from the bus stop, through the town and across the footbridge. Several tour operators in Vilnius offer day trips that include Trakai.
