The Užupio Kavinė (Užupis Cafe) occupies a riverside terrace on the Vilnia River, straddling the point where you cross from the old town into the self-declared republic. In good weather the outdoor seating on the small bridge and riverbank terrace is the most pleasant spot for a coffee or beer in Vilnius. The mermaid sculpture of Užupis sits on the riverbank just downstream.
The cafe has a slightly ramshackle, artistic atmosphere appropriate to its setting. The menu is simple: coffee, beer, wine, light food. The draw is entirely the location and the mood. Come in the afternoon, bring a book, and stay longer than you planned.
