The Place du Marché is Echternach's small central square, just outside the abbey gate. The most striking building is the Denzelt, the old town hall and former tribunal — a late-Gothic stone arcade on the ground floor with a tall medieval upper storey, slightly Disney-ish at first glance but in fact a genuine 14th-century structure restored after war damage. Markets are still held under the arches once a week.
The square is ringed by cafés and small restaurants, and it is the natural place to break a walking tour of the town. The terraces fill up on summer evenings; off-season it is quiet enough to feel like a village square.
