Echternach's compact old town is easily explored on foot: an hour or two takes in the basilica, the abbey precinct, the medieval ramparts, and the riverfront. The real reason to come, though, is the surrounding landscape — the sandstone gorges and forests of the Mullerthal, sometimes called Luxembourg's "Little Switzerland". The town is the natural base for those walks, and the trailheads start within ten minutes of the abbey.
