Wolf Gorge (Wollefsschlucht)

A narrow sandstone canyon in the Mullerthal

The Wolf Gorge is the most photographed slot canyon in Luxembourg's "Little Switzerland" — a deep cleft in soft Luxembourg Sandstone, in places no more than a metre wide, with vertical walls rising five or six metres above the path. Moss and ferns coat the rock; water seeps down the walls; the temperature drops noticeably as you enter.

The gorge is on the Mullerthal Trail just north of Echternach and can be reached in about thirty minutes' walk from the abbey, or by short bus and a path. A wooden boardwalk and steps make the passage easier than it looks, though the rocks can be slippery after rain. Most people combine it with the climb to the nearby Bildchen viewpoint and a longer Mullerthal loop.

A story
Luxembourgish folklore claims the gorge was the haunt of a wolf-spirit that terrorised travellers between the abbey and the surrounding villages — hence the name. In practical terms the gorge is now a twenty-minute scramble that anyone with reasonable balance can manage.
