Highlights

Luxembourg punches well above its weight. In two or three days you can take in a UNESCO-listed capital city, a medieval castle town, ancient forest gorges, and the country's wine region — all without a single long drive.

Luxembourg City's Old Town and fortifications — The Bock Casemates, the Chemin de la Corniche, and the panoramic views over the Alzette gorge are genuinely among the best things in the Benelux. Don't just look at the ramparts from above; walk down into the valley.

Vianden Castle — One of the largest and best-preserved feudal castles in Western Europe. The restoration work over recent decades has been excellent. The town below is charming rather than over-touristed.

The Mullerthal Trail — Marked hiking through sandstone gorges and beech forests in the northeast. Even a single day on this trail will show you why the region is called Little Switzerland.

The Family of Man at Clervaux — Edward Steichen's landmark photography collection, permanently installed in Clervaux Castle. It is a UNESCO Memory of the World. Unexpectedly moving, and worth the journey north.

The Moselle wine villages — Cycling or driving south along the river in September or October, stopping for a glass of Crémant or a crisp Riesling in Remich or Grevenmacher, is one of the pleasantest afternoons in the country.

Free public transport — Since 2020 all buses, trains, and trams are free. This is not a gimmick: it genuinely changes how you move around. Take the train to a trailhead, the bus back to your hotel, and spend what you saved on lunch.
