Currency
Luxembourg uses the Euro (EUR). ATMs are widely available and credit cards are accepted almost everywhere, including small restaurants and shops.
Language
Three languages are in official use: Luxembourgish, French, and German. Luxembourgish (Lëtzebuergesch) is the everyday spoken language and the symbol of national identity. French dominates official life — government, law, signs. German is widely used in the press and in school. English is spoken by most younger people and widely understood in the capital. Don't worry about which language to open with; most Luxembourgers will switch effortlessly.
Visas
Luxembourg is a Schengen member. EU citizens enter freely. Citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, and most other Western countries can stay visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Check current requirements before travelling if you are unsure.
Electricity
230V / 50Hz. Type F sockets (Schuko). Bring an adapter if you are coming from the UK or North America.
Phone
The country code is +352. Mobile coverage is excellent throughout the country. EU roaming regulations mean most European mobile plans work without extra charge. Travellers from outside the EU should check roaming fees or pick up a local SIM.
Opening hours
Shops typically open Monday to Saturday, 9:00–18:00 or 19:00. Many are closed on Sundays, though supermarkets and shops near tourist areas may open. Banks open weekdays, typically 8:30–16:30.
Health
Luxembourg has an excellent public health system. EU citizens should carry their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Non-EU visitors should arrange travel insurance before arrival.
