Moselle-Sûre Confluence

The point where the Sûre meets the Moselle is Wasserbillig's most compelling geographical feature, and worth a short walk from the town centre to appreciate. The two rivers have different characters — the Sûre arrives fast and clear from the Luxembourg interior, the Moselle wide and steady — and watching them merge is satisfying in the way that all river confluences are.

The German village of Oberbillig sits directly across the Moselle, connected by a bridge, and Trier is about 20 km upstream. The vineyard slopes rising on both sides of the valley are particularly fine in autumn when the vines turn.

A story
At this point the Sûre marks the border between Luxembourg and Germany before joining the Moselle, which itself divides Luxembourg from Germany for several kilometres upstream. Standing at the confluence, you are touching three jurisdictions at once — Luxembourg on both banks of the Sûre, Germany on the far bank of the Moselle, and Luxembourg again on the Moselle's left bank further downstream.
