Gradište Monastery

Gradište sits at the top of a steep dirt road behind Buljarica, perched on a small plateau with views down to the sea. There are three small churches in the compound: St Nicholas, St Sava, and the Holy Mother. All have been rebuilt over the centuries, but each contains medieval fresco fragments and a quiet, working atmosphere.

The monastery is still inhabited by a handful of monks. Visiting hours are loose; ring the bell at the gate. Bring modest clothes (shoulders and knees covered) and a small donation for the icon stall. The walk up takes about 30 minutes from the beach.

A story
Founded in the 14th century on a wooded hill above Buljarica, the monastery still has fragments of 16th-century frescoes painted by the master Strahinja of Budimlja. They are among the oldest surviving works of the so-called Boka Kotorska school of Orthodox painting.
