Museum Arnhem

Museum Arnhem is the city's main fine art museum, housed in a mix of an original Art Nouveau villa and a modern glass extension set within Sonsbeek Park on the edge of the city centre. The permanent collection focuses on modern and contemporary Dutch art, with particular strengths in landscape painting, applied arts, and post-war Dutch modernism. Temporary exhibitions typically bring in work from national and international artists.

The setting in the park is one of the museum's best features — the glass-walled spaces look directly into the trees, and the grounds immediately outside host sculpture installations that change periodically. The museum is a short walk from the Korenmarkt along the park edge. Combined with a walk through Sonsbeek Park itself, this makes for a pleasant half-afternoon.

A story
Museum Arnhem sits in Sonsbeek Park in a building that has been enlarged and redesigned several times since it opened in 1919 — the current glass-and-steel extension by Liesbeth van der Pol was controversial when it opened in 2003, sitting transparently next to the original Art Nouveau villa. The museum has an unusually strong collection of Dutch landscape painting from the 19th century, when Arnhem and the Veluwe were considered one of the most beautiful regions in the country.
