Bergen's central landmark — a medieval church reduced to atmospheric ruins and used as the town's primary cultural venue. The original structure dates from the 15th century; only the lower walls, arches, and tower survive, with the sky above. A simple weathered interior that serves as the main concert hall for the International Holland Music Sessions in August.
Outside concert season, the Ruïnekerk grounds are open and free to wander. The churchyard has some interesting old gravestones, and the ruin is best seen in late afternoon light when the old brick glows. The surrounding streets of Bergen are compact and pleasant — the village café terraces spread out around the church on summer days.
