North Holland artist village near dunes and polders, shaped by the Bergen School and a century of creative life.
Bergen is the artist village of North Holland — a green, quiet place where trees outnumber houses and the dunes and polders are always a short walk away. Located just a few kilometres from Alkmaar, famous for its cheese market, Bergen has attracted painters, poets, and musicians for over a century. The Bergen School of expressionist painters made their name here in the early 20th century, and the creative atmosphere hasn't faded.
The centre of Bergen is small and walkable. Everything worth seeing is within strolling distance: the café-lined main square, the 15th-century Ruïnekerk at the heart of town, and Museum Kranenburgh next door, which holds the finest collection of Bergen School expressionist painting. In October the Kunsttiendaagse brings that world out into the open — some hundred local artists open their studios for ten days so visitors can watch them work and talk directly to the people making the art.
For classical music, August is the month to be here. The International Holland Music Sessions run for three weeks, bringing promising young musicians to Bergen for masterclasses and public concerts. The Ruïnekerk is the best venue — a ruined church with the sky above and surprisingly fine acoustics.
Bergen aan Zee, a short bus ride away, is the seaside annex: a small beach resort with wide North Sea beaches and the highest dunes in the Netherlands stretching north towards Schoorl. Many Dutch families return here year after year.
Guide
Getting There
Bergen is about 50 km north of Amsterdam. The most convenient route by public transport is the train to Alkmaar (direct from Amsterdam Centraal, about 40 minutes), then bus 165 or 166 from Alkmaar station to Bergen (about 15 minutes). Buses run regularly throughout the day.
By car from Amsterdam, take the A9 north toward Alkmaar, then follow signs for Bergen. Journey time is 45 minutes outside rush hour, longer during summer weekends when the coastal road gets congested.
Cycling from Alkmaar is a pleasant option in fine weather — the route through the farmland and dunes takes about 45 minutes. Bergen connects to a network of numbered cycle routes (knooppunten) covering the whole region.

When to Go
Bergen is pleasant year-round, but summer and early autumn are the peak season. The beaches at Bergen aan Zee fill up in July and August, so accommodation books out fast — reserve ahead if you're coming then.
August is the month for classical music: the International Holland Music Sessions brings young professional musicians to Bergen for three weeks of masterclasses and daily concerts, many held in the Ruïnekerk. Catch at least one evening there if you can.
Early September brings Jazz & Sail — three days of jazz in the village and on the beach at Bergen aan Zee, combined with catamaran racing on the water. It's lively and free to attend. More at jazzandsailbergen.com.
October is for art lovers: the Kunsttiendaagse (Ten Days of Art) has around a hundred local artists opening their studios to visitors. It's a rare chance to see how the work gets made and to talk to the people behind it.
