Dokkum is a small provincial town, not a food destination, but the quality of Dutch provincial cafe and restaurant cooking has improved considerably in recent years. The main square and canal-side terraces are the places to eat and drink in reasonable weather. Expect traditional Dutch fare — tostis, soups, uitsmijters, and the local speciality: Frisian sugar bread (suikerbrood) and Frisian shortbread (oranjekoek).
