Restaurant Het Schip

Traditional Dutch restaurant near the canal, reliable for a sit-down lunch or dinner.

Restaurant Het Schip (The Ship) takes its name from the maritime heritage of Dokkum and occupies a canal-side spot in the old town. The menu is solidly Dutch-traditional — stamppot in winter, fish dishes in summer, and year-round the kind of cooking that provincial Dutch restaurants have always done well.

The room has low beams and maritime prints on the walls, the kind of decor that would be pastiche in Amsterdam but feels authentic in a place that actually has the history. Service is unhurried in the Frisian manner. This is the place for a proper meal rather than a quick lunch.

Reservations are advisable at weekends and on summer evenings when tourists add to the local trade.
