Terra Maris is the museum for the nature and landscape of Zeeland, housed in the former orangery of Kasteel Westhove — a 13th-century castle between Domburg and Oostkapelle, now a youth hostel. The name means "land of the sea" in Latin, and the museum makes a compelling case for Zeeland's distinctive landscape: the delta, the dunes, the tidal flats, the relentless negotiation between water and land.
The natural history displays cover local geology, birds, marine life, and the flora of the dunes and forests. Outside, the De Manteling nature reserve surrounds the castle grounds with old dune woodland — one of the few significant forested areas on Walcheren. Combining a visit to Terra Maris with a walk through the reserve makes for a fine half-day out from Domburg.
