De Manteling van Walcheren

De Manteling is a belt of ancient dune woodland between Domburg and Oostkapelle, one of the most biodiverse natural areas in Zeeland. The forest is unusually sheltered for a coastal woodland and supports a rich bird life — nightingales, treecreepers, and various woodpecker species breed here. In spring, the woodland floor is carpeted with bluebells.

Well-marked walking and cycling trails thread through the reserve. The combination of dune ridge, old oak and ash woodland, and open heath is visually distinct from the flat agricultural land that dominates most of Walcheren. The Kasteel Westhove and the Terra Maris museum sit at the forest's edge. A half-day walking circuit connecting the forest with the coast is one of the best ways to experience what makes this part of Zeeland different.
