Enschede's food scene is driven by its student population. The Oude Markt and the surrounding streets have plenty of cafes, Dutch bar-restaurants (eetcafes), and a handful of more serious restaurants. Twente cuisine features hearty regional dishes — stoverij (slow-braised beef), smoked sausage, and pastries from the Gelderse bakery tradition — alongside the standard Dutch menu.
