Het Rutbeek is Enschede's easy outdoor escape: a lake and recreation area set in the Twente countryside south-west of town. On warm days it works like a city beach, with lawns, swimming spots, trails, and families spreading out for the afternoon.
The draw is not a single monument but the range of things you can do without going far from Enschede. Bring a bike if you can; the ride out gives you a better feel for the flat, green landscape around the city, and the lake makes a relaxed counterpoint to the museums and squares in the centre.
