Jopenkerk

A craft brewery and restaurant housed in a former church — the Jacobskerk, a Gothic building dating from the 15th century. The brewing kettles stand where the altar used to be, and you drink your beer in the nave under vaulted ceilings. The conversion is well done: the church architecture is respected, the beer is good, and the atmosphere manages to be both reverent and convivial.

Jopen is Haarlem's local brewery, reviving a centuries-old Haarlem brewing tradition — the city was one of the great beer producers of the medieval Netherlands, exporting to Flanders and beyond. Try the Koyt, a historical recipe brewed with a mix of grains instead of just barley. The restaurant serves solid Dutch-international food. On the Gedempte Voldersgracht, a short walk north of the Grote Markt. Reservations recommended for dinner.
