Museum Heerenveen

The town museum, housed in a row of restored eighteenth-century houses on the Minckelersstraat, covers the story of Heerenveen from its origins as a peat-cutting settlement to the present day. Exhibits run through the role of the Schoterlandse Compagnie that drained the surrounding bogs, the rise of the town hall regents, and — inevitably — the speed-skating tradition that put Heerenveen on the international map.

The displays are well-curated for a town museum and the building itself, knitted together from several adjoining houses, is part of the appeal. A couple of hours is enough. Closed on Mondays.
