Oranjewoud Estate

A few kilometres east of central Heerenveen, the wooded Oranjewoud estate was laid out in the seventeenth century for the Frisian Nassau family. What remains today is a network of formal avenues, ornamental ponds, and the small but well-regarded Museum Belvédère — a modern building set into a low hill, holding twentieth-century Dutch art with a Frisian accent (Willem van Althuis, Boele Bregman, Jan Roeland).

Combining a walk through the estate with an hour at the Belvédère is the best half-day outing in the area. Bring a bike or drive — public transport reaches Oranjewoud village but the woods are easier to explore on two wheels.
