Hoogovensmuseum

Steel industry heritage museum in a converted pipe factory, Tuesdays and Thursdays

The Hoogovensmuseum preserves the industrial heritage of IJmuiden's steelworks — the massive Koninklijke Hoogovens plant, now operated by Tata Steel, that has defined the northern part of the town since the 1920s. The museum occupies a former pipe-making factory (buizengieterij) within the old works complex, with exhibits covering the history of steel production in IJmuiden, the technology used, and the lives of the workers who kept the furnaces running.

The museum runs a vintage steam train on select operating days, which adds a pleasant period element to a visit. On regular open days (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10am to 4pm) the main galleries and the converted cooling bathhouse are accessible. Admission is modest, and children under 16 enter free.

The museum is part of the Holland Route industrial heritage trail and sits on the northern side of the North Sea Canal locks — the view from outside takes in both the industrial landscape of the steelworks and the shipping traffic on the canal. It is a good place to understand why IJmuiden looks the way it does, and why the town grew so rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
