The lakes and small towns of southwest Friesland are all within easy reach. Sneek, with its medieval water gate, is the obvious destination for a day; Staveren, the old Hanseatic port to the south on the Zuiderzee, makes for a pleasant boat or bicycle excursion. The Urk fishing village (across the lake by car) is technically Flevoland but feels like Friesland in mood.
