Twentekanaal

Shipping canal along the north side of town, with a riverside cycle path

The Twentekanaal — built in the 1930s to link Twente's industry with the IJssel — runs east-west just north of Lochem. The towpath cycle route along its straight bank is one of the easiest long-distance rides in the Achterhoek, suitable for any bicycle and almost flat. East takes you toward Goor and Hengelo; west, toward the lock at Eefde and the IJssel itself.

Where the canal meets the railway at the eastern edge of town, the unusual lifting Nettelhorster bridge is worth a stop, especially when a barge is being raised through.
