A slender pedestrian and cycle bridge completed in 2003 as part of the Ceramique development, the Hoge Brug (High Bridge) rises steeply from both banks in a steep arch to clear river traffic. Designed by René Greisch, it is one of the more elegant pieces of contemporary infrastructure in the Netherlands and has become part of the city's modern skyline.
The bridge connects the old city centre to the Avenue Céramique and the Bonnefantenmuseum on the east bank. It is best seen at night when it is lit — the reflection in the Meuse, with the Bonnefantenmuseum's dome visible beyond, is one of the better views in Maastricht after dark.
