The central square of Maastricht and the social heart of the city. On its south side stand the twin towers of the Basilica of Saint Servatius and the red-towered Sint-Janskerk; on its north and east sides, a long row of café terraces that fill from spring through autumn. The Vrijthof has a generosity of scale unusual in Dutch cities — broad, unhurried, designed for lingering rather than transit.
The square comes into its own during events: the Preuvenemint food festival in late August, outdoor concerts, and the Christmas market that spills out from the caves into the square in December. On any sunny afternoon, it is one of the most pleasant places to sit in the Netherlands.
