Practical Information

Visas. The Netherlands is a Schengen Area member. Citizens of the EU, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and most other Western countries can enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Since October 2025, non-EU travellers are registered at the border under the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES). Check current requirements before you travel as temporary border controls with Belgium and Germany have been in place since late 2024.

Currency. The euro (€) is the currency. ATMs are widely available and most accept international cards. Contactless card payments are very common — the Netherlands is one of Europe's most cashless societies and many smaller restaurants, cafés, and even some market stalls no longer accept cash at all. Carry a small amount for emergencies, but your contactless card will get you far.

Language. Dutch is the official language. The Dutch speak excellent English — better than almost anywhere else in Europe — so communication is rarely a problem. In tourist-heavy areas, French and German are also widely understood.

Tipping. Not mandatory, but appreciated. Rounding up the bill or leaving 5–10% in a café or restaurant is standard. In taxis, rounding up to the nearest euro is common.

Safety. The Netherlands is a safe country for travellers. Petty theft is the main concern, particularly in Amsterdam's Centraal Station area, the Red Light District, and on busy trams. Keep an eye on your belongings. Cycling at night in unfamiliar areas can be hazardous — bike paths are not always lit and are sometimes shared with mopeds.

Health. No vaccinations are required. EU citizens should carry an EHIC card for access to state healthcare. Non-EU visitors should have comprehensive travel insurance. Pharmacies (apotheek) are clearly signed; for minor ailments, staff are helpful and usually speak English.

Emergency services. Dial 112 for police, fire, or ambulance.

Electricity. 230V, Type C/F plugs (standard European). UK and US visitors will need an adapter.

Opening hours. Shops typically open Monday to Saturday 9:00–18:00, with late-night shopping (koopavond) on Thursdays or Fridays until 21:00. Sunday opening is common in larger cities. Many smaller museums close on Mondays.
