Circustheater

1904 art-nouveau theatre that hosts long-running Dutch-language musicals

The Circustheater opened in 1904 as a permanent circus building — a domed, art-nouveau hall designed by Hendrik Hugo de Jonge. Circus performances continued until 1967, when the building was converted to a musical theatre. Since then it has been the standard Dutch venue for long-running musicals: Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, The Lion King have each run here for several years.

Even from outside the building is worth a glance: a striking copper-clad dome with bronze details, set just back from the Kurhaus on the inland side. Tickets for the current show via Stage Entertainment. Performances most evenings; matinees on Wednesdays and Sundays.
