Madurodam

Miniature park reproducing the Netherlands at 1:25 scale

Madurodam is a 17,000-square-metre miniature park that reproduces the entire Netherlands at 1:25 scale, with the focus on architectural landmarks and infrastructure: Amsterdam canals, Rotterdam port, Schiphol airport, the Delta works, Maastricht, Den Bosch. The detail is obsessive — working trains run on a 4 km miniature rail network, Schiphol's miniature aircraft taxi, and locks on the miniature waterways actually fill and empty.

The park has been gradually expanded since 1952 and now includes some larger walk-through interactive areas explaining Dutch water management and trade history. Best with children but enjoyed by adults. Allow two to three hours. Open daily; tickets are timed in summer. About fifteen minutes' walk south of the Scheveningen boulevard or two stops on tram 9.

A story
Madurodam was founded in 1952 as a memorial to George Maduro, a Dutch resistance fighter from Curaçao who died in Dachau in 1945. His parents funded the park as a permanent memorial and donated all profits to children's charities — a structure the park still maintains. Every Dutch monarch since has been on the honorary board.
