Formerum

Terschelling village centred on a working windmill and a shipwreck museum built from coastal salvage.

Formerum is a small village about halfway along Terschelling, between West-Terschelling and Oosterend. The village is dominated by its working windmill, De Koffiemolen, where you can stop for coffee and cranberry pie. The eccentric Wrakkenmuseum — a shipwreck museum built up over decades from salvage off the Terschelling coast — is the other reason to stop.

The beach is about 2 km north, reached by a pleasant path through forest and dunes. On the way you pass a pony-riding stable popular with children. The village has a small supermarket and several bike rental shops — cycling is the main way to get around Terschelling.

Bars and Cafes

The Koffiemolen windmill is the obvious stop for coffee and cranberry pie, with its collection of antique coffee mills inside. The Wrakkenmuseum also runs a small café on the museum's terrace.
