Midsland

Central Terschelling village with Frisian houses, island restaurants, and easy cycling to beach and dunes.

Midsland is the main village on Terschelling, sitting roughly in the centre of the island. It is where most visitors end up — the village has the island's best concentration of restaurants, cafes, and shops, and several campsites are within cycling distance.

Despite the tourist infrastructure, Midsland keeps its character. The old village centre has traditional Frisian houses and the Meslaner Church, a listed 19th-century building, and the wide Midsland aan Zee beach on the north side of the island is just a short bike ride away. In summer the village fills with cyclists, and the annual Sint Jan's Draverij horse race is one of the most popular local events on the Wadden Islands.

Things to Do

Midsland is a good base for cycling the length of Terschelling. The 40-kilometre "Traces in the Sand" route takes you through dunes, pine forest, salt marshes, and along the wide North Sea beach. The village itself has a church dating from 1881, a scattering of traditional Frisian cottages, and the island's most lively cafe scene outside West-Terschelling.

Every summer the Sint Jan's Draverij horse race is held here — one of the oldest festivals on the island, held on the long grass behind the village. At the start of September the same streets host Rock 'n Roll Street, a weekend of 1950s music, classic cars, and dancing.
