EcoMare

EcoMare is Texel's main indoor attraction — part marine rescue centre, part natural history museum, and entirely worth an hour or two. The ground floor covers the geology, ecology, and wildlife of the Wadden Sea and the North Sea dunes with clear, well-designed displays; the seal rehabilitation pools behind the building are the real draw.

Injured and orphaned seals are brought here from across the Wadden coast, nursed back to health, and released. The pool area gives visitors a close view of the animals at various stages of recovery, from tiny pups to fully grown grey seals. The museum also runs a small aquarium of local North Sea species. Children love it; adults generally do too. Entry fees are reasonable and the attached café has a terrace overlooking the dunes.

A story
EcoMare began in 1965 as a rescue station for oiled seabirds after a tanker spill fouled the Dutch coast. Today it rehabilitates around 1,500 seals and 3,000 seabirds a year, releasing the healthy ones back into the Wadden Sea — you can watch the seals being fed from a viewing platform above their outdoor pool.
