Vøringsfossen Waterfall

Vøringsfossen is about a 90-minute drive west of Geilo along the Hardangervidda crossing road (Route 7) toward the Hardanger fjord. The viewing platforms are signposted from the road and easy to reach by car. The waterfall itself is at its most thunderous in early summer when snowmelt is at peak.

The site also has the historic Fossli Hotel perched on the canyon rim, with a famous painting by Norwegian artist Hans Gude on display. The new pedestrian bridge across the canyon, opened in 2020, lets visitors walk a complete loop with views of both the fall and the gorge. Combine with a visit to the Hardangervidda Nature Centre at Eidfjord for a full day.

A story
Vøringsfossen drops 182 metres in a single fall from the edge of the Hardangervidda plateau into the green gorge of Måbødalen below — one of the tallest and most-visited waterfalls in Norway. The viewing platforms on both sides of the gorge, redesigned in 2020 by Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk, are themselves worth the visit for the dramatic cantilevered architecture.
