Bøkfjorden

The fjord arm on which Kirkenes sits, good for kayaking and RIB tours

Bøkfjorden is the fjord that gives Kirkenes its reason for existing: a deep sheltered arm of the Varangerfjord that allowed the export of iron ore from the Sydvaranger mines and provided a harbour for the Hurtigruten. The fjord is relatively modest by Norwegian standards — no dramatic waterfalls or towering cliff walls — but it has its own stark beauty, particularly in winter when ice forms at the edges and the hills to the north catch the polar light.

In summer, local operators run RIB boat tours along the fjord and out into the Varangerfjord, sometimes as far as the bird cliffs at the outer coast. The birdlife here — including king eiders, long-tailed ducks, and white-tailed eagles — is the main attraction on summer boat trips. Sea kayaking is also possible with rental equipment, though the cold water means a drysuit is not optional.
