Storskog Border Crossing

The only road border post between Norway and Russia — 15 km from town

The Storskog crossing, 15 km east of Kirkenes, is the only road border post between Norway and Russia. The crossing itself is a study in contrasts: Norwegian efficiency on one side, Russian bureaucracy on the other, and a few hundred metres of no-man's-land between them.

The Norwegian border area is accessible to all visitors — you can drive out and see the fence, the guard posts, and the surprisingly mundane infrastructure of a heavily watched frontier. Crossing into Russia requires a valid Russian visa; without one, this is the end of the road. Even just standing at the edge of the Norwegian side and looking across at the Russian checkpoint gives a sense of how close Kirkenes is to another world entirely. Local tour operators run day trips to the border that provide good historical context about the Cold War years and the modern relationship between the two communities.

A story
For most of the Cold War, this stretch of fence was one of the most heavily militarised borders in Europe. The border zone was sealed, local residents needed special passes, and Norwegian and Soviet soldiers watched each other across the wire. Today the same crossing handles a steady flow of Russian shoppers coming to Kirkenes for Norwegian goods — though that traffic has changed dramatically since 2022.
