Several operators based in and around Kirkenes run husky safaris from December through March, when there is reliable snow cover. Half-day trips — typically two to three hours of driving a team of Greenlandic huskies across frozen lakes and through birch forest — are the most common format, but overnight and multi-day expeditions deeper into the taiga are also available if you want to sleep in a wilderness cabin and wake up surrounded by dogs and snow.
The experience of driving your own team is more physical than it looks: you steer a heavy sled, manage the dogs, and do a certain amount of running behind the sled on uphill sections. Most operators run a short briefing session before departure and pair novices with experienced guides. Book well in advance in January and February, when demand is highest.
