Getting Around

On foot: The four islands of the town centre — Kirkelandet, Innlandet, Nordlandet, and Gomalandet — are connected by bridges and are all walkable. The distance from Kirkelandet to Innlandet and back is under 3 kilometres; the walk to Nordlandet adds another kilometre. Most visitors stay on foot for everything within the town.

By sundbåt: The harbour ferry (sundbåt) provides a quicker and more enjoyable crossing between the islands than walking the bridges. Boats run frequently from early morning until late evening. A single ticket costs around 35 NOK; day passes are available. The sundbåt is a genuine local service and has been running since 1876 — it is not a tourist boat.

By bus: Local buses (Rutebil) connect the islands and reach the airport. Useful for getting to Kvernberget (the mountain viewpoint) if you don't want to walk up. The network is sufficient for visiting main sights but not extensive; check Fram timetables for current schedules.

By car: A hire car is worth having for a day if you plan to visit the Atlantic Ocean Road — public transport options out to Averøy are limited and infrequent. Cars can be hired at the airport. Parking in the town centre is available but limited; most hotels have parking.

By bike: Kristiansund is compact and relatively flat on the main islands. Bikes can be hired from some hotels and the tourist office. Cycling across the Sørsund Bridge to Innlandet is a pleasant way to reach the museum quarter.
