Hafjell Alpine Centre

Hafjell Alpine Centre lies about 15 kilometres north of Lillehammer, and its 33 ski runs and gondola make it the main downhill skiing option for visitors to the area. The resort is linked by shuttle bus to Lillehammer during the ski season (typically December to April). The combination of Olympic pedigree, reliable snow cover, and easy access from Lillehammer make it a logical choice for a ski day.

In summer, Hafjell reinvents itself as a mountain bike park, with the gondola running to the summit and a trail network ranging from green family routes to serious black-grade descents. Bike rental is available at the base. A combined ski season day pass covering Hafjell and the nearby Kvitfjell resort (which hosted the 1994 Olympic speed events) is available and worth considering for a multi-day ski trip.

A story
Hafjell hosted the Alpine skiing events at the 1994 Winter Olympics, and the downhill course descends over 800 metres of vertical drop — enough to make this a serious mountain by Norwegian standards. In summer the same slopes are converted for mountain biking, with gondola uplift and a network of trails that has established Hafjell as one of Scandinavia's main bike parks. The descent run used for the 1994 men's downhill, won by Tommy Moe of the United States, can be identified from the gondola and remains the most technically demanding line on the mountain.
