When to Go

Lillehammer has two distinct peak seasons. Winter (December to March) is for skiing and cross-country trails, with Hafjell resort 15 km north and an extensive network of groomed cross-country tracks accessible from the town. The Birkebeiner race in March is the social highlight of the winter calendar and brings thousands of participants and spectators.

Summer (June to August) is for Maihaugen, the Skibladner paddle steamer, and hiking in the surrounding fells. The Norwegian Festival of Literature, held in late May to early June, turns the town into a temporary book fair with readings, debates, and events throughout. July and August are the busiest and most expensive months; accommodation in Lillehammer can be tight during Birkebeiner week or during popular summer events.

Spring and autumn are quiet but entirely pleasant for a visit: the town is accessible, the main museums are open, and the 19th-century streets have a peaceful quality that disappears in peak season.
