Kanthaugen Freestyle Arena

Kanthaugen Freestyle Arena lies adjacent to the Lysgårdsbakken ski jump complex on the hillside above Lillehammer. Built for the 1994 Winter Olympics, it hosted the moguls and aerials freestyle skiing events, and has remained in use for training and competition since. The course is more technical than it looks from below — the mogul field on the main slope covers significant vertical drop.

The arena is accessible as part of the Lillehammer Olympiapark complex, which organises guided tours of all the 1994 Olympic venues. In winter, the surrounding area is used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with groomed trails connecting Kanthaugen to the Birkebeineren ski stadium and the wider network around the town.

A story
Kanthaugen was built for the 1994 Winter Olympics to host the freestyle skiing events — moguls and aerials — disciplines that were still new to the Olympic programme and not yet fully understood by the Norwegian public. The aerials event, in which skiers launch off ramps and execute multiple somersaults 10–15 metres in the air, produced one of the spectacles of the Lillehammer Games. The venue is used today for training and competition in freestyle disciplines and as part of the Olympiaparken guided tour.
