Flakstad Church

Timber church of 1780 with a Russian-style onion cupola, the only one of its kind in Lofoten

Flakstad Church sits in an open setting just outside Ramberg, the only timber church in Lofoten with an onion-shaped cupola. The 1780 building is painted red with white trim and white windows, in the standard idiom of north Norwegian churches, but the cupola is the giveaway: a hint of the long trade routes that once connected this coast to Archangel and the White Sea.

The interior is simple, with a pulpit and altar from the older 17th-century church that preceded the current building. The graveyard around the church holds many of the local fishing-family names. The church is occasionally open for services and concerts in summer.

A story
Flakstad Church was built in 1780 in pine timber, with an onion-shaped cupola unusual for a Norwegian parish church and probably influenced by contact with Russian Pomor traders who fished and traded along the Lofoten coast in the 18th century. The altarpiece predates the building — it was brought from an older church on the same site — and shows the Resurrection in a folk-painted style.
