When to Go

Summer (June–August) gives Kabelvåg long, light days — the midnight sun runs from late May to mid-July at this latitude — and the village is at its busiest, with all museums open and the harbour active. Temperatures sit around 12–17°C.

Cod season (January–April) is the village's historic raison d'être, and although the great seasonal armies of fishermen are long gone, this is when the cod arrive in the Vestfjord and racks of drying stockfish appear around the village. Cold, dark, and dramatic.

Winter (October–March) is also when the Northern Lights are visible — Kabelvåg sits well above the Arctic Circle and dark skies are easy to find. The village has none of the light pollution of Svolvær.
